About the facility:

  • Hours / ER: The Emergency Room is open 24/7, year‑round.
  • Services offered include:
    • Ambulance/emergency services
    • Acute inpatient care
    • Radiology / diagnostic imaging
    • Laboratory services
    • Therapy services (physical, occupational, speech)
    • Cardiac rehabilitation
    • Behavioral health outpatient / mental health services (in some capacity)
    • Home health services, senior life / geriatric services
  • Clinic part / associated outpatient care:
  • The hospital has a Rural Health Clinic component or “healthcare clinic” under the same umbrella, providing services such as family medicine, pediatrics, lab work, X‑ray, preventive care, etc.
  • Trauma designation: The hospital is listed by the South Dakota Department of Health as a Designated Trauma Receiving Hospital (TRH) for Bennett County, meaning it has 24/7 emergency department coverage (though not necessarily full surgical services).
  • Recent developments:
    • The hospital has been undergoing or planning major upgrades. In 2025, a new ~$19 million hospital and expanded emergency department will be constructed to replace or supplement aging infrastructure.
    • In late 2023, the hospital’s nursing home component was closed due to financial difficulties and staffing constraints.
    • The historical hospital building dates back to the mid‑1900s, with the current facility constructed in 1954 and expansions added over the years.

Limitations/context:

  • Because this is a small, rural community, the hospital is relatively small in scale and resources. It serves large geographic areas (not just Bennett County) and often covers parts of adjacent counties.
  • Some services (e.g., advanced specialty surgery, high-level trauma, or highly specialized care) may not be available locally and might require patient transfer to a larger hospital in a more urban area.
  • The hospital and community have faced financial and operational pressures, common in rural healthcare settings, but the ongoing construction and investment reflect an effort to strengthen local care access.
